Meet the 2017 Quilters University Instructors:

Linda McGibbon
grew up in Detroit, Michigan. Her husbands retirement allowed them to move to a home on a lake near Midland, Michigan. In 2005 she bought her first sewing machine and began to quilt. From the beginning, she began changing up patterns, bought the EQ6 computer software and started designing original quilts. After buying a longarm quilting machine, she was named Rookie of the Yearat the 2012 Machine Quilters Showcase. Linda publishes a line of patterns, lectures and teaches. She has won several awards at quilts shows around the country. Linda is currently designing patterns for Anthology Fabrics. She believes that one of the best things about quilting is all the new friends she has met.

Leslie Peterson lives with her husband and three children in Bay City, MI. As a young child she has always loved working with her hands on some kind of a craft. She remembers that, as a young child, her mother and grandmother would take her to a General Store and,  instead of buying a toy, she would head over to the adult craft aisle and select a stitching project. Her grandmother and mother were very talented knitters, so Leslie is a totally self-taught stitcher. In her 30s, Leslie retired from a 17-year career as a special education teacher, which enabled her to take on quilting seriously. She is currently a pattern designer of wool, embroidery and appliqué patterns and is a program teacher representative for Wonderfil Speciality Threads. As partners, Leslie and Linda travel all over Michigan teaching and showing their quilts. Leslie has the simple philosophy that she lives by, stating that “If you find something you love to do and can find a way to make a living at it, you will never be working”. If you have ever been a guest at one of Linda and Leslie’s trunk shows it is quite evident that the two friends love what they do and love sharing their gift with others.

Sheila Smith – Having worked in a quilting store for 12 years, Sheila Smith has worked on many styles of quilts. But the day she saw a beautiful white whole cloth quilt, she fell in love. She decided then and there that she wanted to be a free motion machine quilter. After mastering the technique, Sheila now loves teaching free motion machine quilting. She regularly teaches free motion skills to beginner quilters as well as more experienced quilters. Sheila has a knack for helping you overcome any hesitancy or fear you may have of quilting on your domestic machine. Sheila enjoys working with many different quilters with many different levels of experience.

Deborah Richmond is a pattern designer, quilt instructor, YouTube personality and owner of The Quilted Turtle online Quilt Shop. Deborah’s mother taught her to quilt when she was a child, and she has never stopped! She designs quilts and creates quilt tutorial videos, which can be seen on her YouTube channel. Her channel focuses on teaching simple skills to new quilters and demonstrating quilters tools and gadgets that she personally tests and selects. Deborah likes to work with new quilters, teaching them how to make beautiful quilts with basic skills. Everyone starts somewhere, and Deborah loves sharing her passion for quilting with other quilters.
